LIFE ON EARTH
A group of 40 people navigated individual creativity and collective design to create a garden and tent using recycled materials. Their goal is to establish a space for events and regeneration at Hönggerberg on the ETH campus in Zürich. The project is inspired by Lina Bo Bardi's Espírito Santo Church in Brazil. The design of the garden mirrors the grid of the Anergienetz below and translates it into the space above ground, using fruit trees to form an orchard and lower shrubs and bushes to fill the spaces in between. Using the plans of the Espírito Santo Church, the team was left with a half circle on the limited site to shape their tent.
A variety of materials, including a hot air balloon, timber from the dismantled Huber Pavilions, bricks from the old garden, and ropes salvaged from climbing halls, were provided for different groups of experts to become familiar with. They gathered knowledge and learned necessary crafts to design and refine different parts that relied on one another, ultimately creating a tent. The project required consideration of topics such as tent storage, drying, ease of assembly, handling large amounts of fabric, and safety in inclement weather.
